How the phases work

The Moon takes about 29.5 days to go through its full cycle. It starts dark at new moon, grows to a bright half at first quarter, fills to a complete disc at full moon, then shrinks back through last quarter to new again. Between those four key moments it passes through the crescent and gibbous phases day by day.

Dates above are computed from an astronomical mean-phase model and may vary by up to a day from published ephemerides depending on your time zone.
