What is a moon calendar and what is it for?

The moon calendar organizes the year by the phases of the Moon instead of the weeks of the solar calendar. The Moon completes a cycle —from new moon to new moon— every 29.5 days, passing through eight phases visible to the naked eye.

For centuries this calendar has guided agriculture, fishing, rituals and even hair care. It is still used today to decide the best time to plant, prune, cut hair or simply to know when the next full moon will rise.

Supermoons and eclipses of 2026

2026 brings 3 supermoons —when the full moon coincides with the closest point of its orbit and looks bigger and brighter— and 2 lunar eclipses.

Supermoons

January 3, November 24 and December 24. The two at year's end, with clean winter skies, are the best to photograph.

Lunar eclipses

On March 3 there is a total eclipse visible from the Americas: the Moon turns coppery red (the "blood moon") for about an hour. On August 28, a partial eclipse covers about 96% of the lunar disk.

How to use the moon calendar

🌱 Garden

In the waxing phase and full moon the sap rises: ideal for sowing leafy crops and fruits. In the waning phase and new moon, better for roots, pruning and transplanting.

💇 Haircut

Tradition says cutting in the first quarter helps hair grow faster and stronger; in the waning phase, slower but with more body.

🎣 Fishing

New and full moon days often bring stronger tides and more fish activity.

🔭 Observation

To see craters, the best phase is NOT the full moon (too bright) but the quarters, when shadows reveal the relief.
